National Security - Updated

Republicans have been in control of the House, Senate, and White House for 6 years, and have failed to use their majority status to fight the real war on terror. Here is where our country stands today on the war in Iraq, and here is the Spivack Plan of Action:

Current Situation:

  • The United States has lost over 2500 service men and women in Iraq, with another 15,000 seriously wounded
  • Tens of thousands of Iraqi citizens have perished
  • Iraq itself is tumbling into a civil war between Shi’ite and Sunni Arabs, with the Iraqi government unable to provide basic security or government services for the Iraqi people
  • Insurgents detonate roadside explosives and car bombs on an almost daily basis
  • Anti-American sentiment has dramatically increased worldwide
  • Osama bin Laden remains at large, and Al Qaeda is still planning and carrying out attacks throughout the world
  • Al Qaeda’s allies, the Taliban, are making a comeback in Afghanistan
  • North Korea and Iran are continuing with their nuclear weapons programs

Spivack Plan of Action:

  • Work with friendly nations in the Middle East and prove through deeds, not just words, that the U.S. shares their interests in stability in the region, and especially in Iraq.
  • Encourage participation, financial and military, from friendly allies and from the UN, in the Lebanon security force, to ensure that our troops stay out of Lebanon, while backing NATO’s growing role in Afghanistan
  • Develop, in consultation with Iraqi leaders, a responsible exit strategy involving the gradual drawdown of US troops in the region.
  • Pressure Iraq’s Shi’ite leadership to stop the Shi’ite death squads that are propelling the country into civil war
  • Announce a date certain for the end of U.S. combat operations in Iraq, putting the Iraqi government on notice that they will have to resolve their own security problems, and not rely on the U.S. to do it for them, while telling the insurgents that we will leave on our own schedule, not theirs.
  • Increasingly allow the Iraqi security forces to carry out military operations, while the US military shifts toward providing training and logistical support
  • Maintain and improve the management of our humanitarian aid package to the Iraqi people to help them get back on their feet
  • Pursue effective negotiations with North Korea and Iran, on the model of President Clinton’s 1994 deal with North Korea, to stop both countries’ nuclear weapons programs
