Spivack sides with Minner against flip-flopping Castle

SPIVACK SIDES WITH MINNER, AGAINST FLIP-FLOPPING CASTLE IN KEEPING STATE CONTROL OF NATIONAL GUARD

51 Governors from the U.S. and territories have signed a bi-partisan petition asking the Senate not to federalize the National Guard

 August 15th, 2006

NEWARK, Del. –The nation’s governors today are asking Congress to oppose a provision in a bill passed by the House that will give President Bush the power over National Guard forces. Gov. Ruth Ann Minner (D-DE) – one of 51 governors of states and territories to decry this action – has been a vocal opponent, and both of Delaware’sU.S. Senators agree.

Today Democratic congressional candidate Dennis Spivack repeated the calls of the nation’s governors, saying that there is no reason why the President should take the ability to mobilize the guard from the governors.

“It seems that everyone except for the out-of-touch House Republicans is in agreement,” Spivack said. “51 governors on a national level, as well as Gov. Minner, Sens. Biden and Carper, and the adjunct general of the Delaware National Guard on a local level are all opposed. No matter their party, they all know that the National Guard belongs under the watch of our governors. Mike Castle still thought that the President needed yet more power, and now he can’t even decide what should happen.”

Rep. Castle voted for the provision, and has since taken opposing stances on the issue. In an article published last week, Castle said he thought it was important that “governors retain their authority” over the Guard. Spivack lambasted Castle’s misguided priorities and reasserted his desire to bring a new direction to Delaware’s lone U.S. House seat in Washington.

“Mike Castle showed his faux moderation yet again,” said Spivack. “Governors from both parties adamantly oppose this, and still he sided with the president. Now, after realizing how wrong he was, Mike is frantically backtracking. It’s just another case of Mike being out of touch with his country, his delegation, and most importantly, with Delaware.”
