.An article in The News Journal March 29, 2006, entitled "Castle Leads Effort to Block Bush Budget" quotes CongressmanCastle as "threatening to derail" the Bush budget plan because of it would cost "Delaware schools and hospitals millions." Now that it is campaign season and the Congressman has an opponent who is holding him accountable for his votes, Castle is forced again to convince voters that he is, in fact, a moderate.
ButCongressmanCastle recently revealed his true stripes when he voted to balance the budget on the backs of the middle class by cutting $39 billion in social programs – hurting children, needy families, the elderly, the poor and the sick – while at the same time voting for $56 billion in Bush tax cuts for the wealthy.
If Castle was a real moderate, he would have voted against the $39 billion cuts in social programs. If he had done so, he could have stopped that legislation – it only passed the House by two votes. But the Congressman voted to support both the cuts in social programs and the tax cuts for the rich. That's fiscally irresponsible when the Country is facing such an unimaginably high budget deficit.
So you have to be suspicious of Castle's sudden conversion and his concerns about the loss of millions of dollars for schools and hospitals. Is this the type of Congressman who is really concerned about the middle class? Is this really a moderate?
Finally, if the Congressman is so concerned with the plight of his constituents, why isn't he leading the charge, or even just chiming in on the investigation of crippling electric rate hikes of between 59 percent and 120 percent? These rate hikes will force many Delawareans to choose among warming their homes, buying food, or paying for health insurance for their families. How is it that our lone Congressman dares to continue to call himself a moderate while still enabling policies that further burden middle- and lower-income Delawareans?
Where have you been, CongressmanCastle, when the people of Delaware have needed you?
